HAMBURG, N.Y. (WGRZ/WHEC) — Before the Rochester area experienced lake effect snow and high winds Friday, the same weather system hit the Buffalo area.
In Hamburg, outside Buffalo, cold temperatures, gale-force winds and 18-foot waves from Lake Erie created an ice spectacle at Hoover Beach.
The ice on some houses was up to 3 feet thick, and several powerlines and trees collapsed under the weight of the ice.
But what causes lake effect snow? Stacey Pensgen explains in the video above.
