ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — We have an update on one of your Good Questions, and it has to do with illegal, loud mufflers and exhaust systems on cars and motorcycles.

In October, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation cracking down on the systems, it’s called the "Sleep Act." The act changes the maximum fine from $150 to $1,000. Any inspection station or repair shop cited with violations related to illegal mufflers and exhaust set-ups could lose their license.

The law will go into effect on Friday, April 1.

Supporters say while souped-up and modified mufflers have been illegal, current law needs more teeth to enforce it. Lawmakers have looked at other measures, too.
