ROCHESTER, N.Y.(WHEC)—We’ve got a Good Question follow up about automatic subscription and membership fees.

A new law introduced by the New York State Division of Consumer Protection officially took effect Tuesday, and here’s what it does: Going forward, businesses offering automatic renewals must clearly tell you everything up front, and you have to opt-in before getting charged. Those companies also have to make it much easier to cancel your membership, like at a gym.

This could include setting up toll-free numbers, email contacts, mailing address, or another easy way to stop a service. Also- if you originally signed up for an offer online, you must be able to cancel it online.
