PAB is investigating officer-involved shooting on Murray Street

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Accountability Board is investigating the deadly shooting on Christmas Eve that involved an RPD officer.

The shooting happened on Murray Street around 8:30 a.m. RPD Chief David Smith said an officer was chasing a suspect who pulled out a handgun. RPD said the officer discharged his weapon four to five times before shooting the suspect in the upper body. The man in his 40s died at the hospital.

The PAB says it started its investigation around 2 p.m. the day of the shooting. The PAB is encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to visit the PAB’s website or call its number at (585) 428-9999 to speak with a case manager. People can also share photos, audio, or videos through rocpab.wetransfer.com.

“in this case in particular, it was what we call a self-initiated investigation, which means the PAB saw the release from the RPD and our investigators initiated an investigation — went to the scene to canvass as well as speak to witnesses and collect an information they could,” said Vanessa Cheeks with the PAB.

The state Attorney General’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, and RPD’s Major Crimes Unit are also investigating, which is standard protocol for any officer-involved shooting.
